The ways you can pay a roadside fine have changed
Designed to make the way drivers pay penalties more efficient, a new system came into play last week, speeding up payments. A change in the company the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) uses to take payments for roadside fines means drivers who are fined can use Apple Pay and Google Pay to pay.
What are the terms used for roadside fines?
Roadside fines are also known as Fixed Penalty Notices, or FPNs.
What types of offences are the fines associated with?
The DVSA can issue roadside fines for a wide range of roadworthiness and licensing offences, including vehicle defects and other offences such as breaking the rules around drivers’ hours.
Who do the fines apply to?
Roadside fines apply to not only UK drivers but foreign drivers too.
How much can a roadside fine cost?
Fines can range from £50 to £300, depending on the severity of the offence.
What offences can be given a roadside fine?
- Driver’s hours and tachograph offences such as exceeding daily or weekly driving time limits and failing to use, tampering with or falsifying a tachograph.
- Vehicle roadworthiness offences including driving an unroadworthy vehicle such as one with defective brakes, tyres, lights etc or an overloaded or dangerously loaded vehicle.
- Licensing and documentation offences such as operating without a valid Operator’s Licence, MOT certificate (if required), vehicle insurance etc.
- Weight and load offences including overloading axles or gross vehicle weight and incorrect load securing and use of trailers.
- Emissions and mechanical defects including emissions tampering and using a vehicle that does not meet emissions standards.
- Driver conduct and road safety offences such as driving while using a mobile phone, without a seatbelt in operation etc.
Can you get more than one fine at the same time?
Multiple fines can be issued at the same time where various offences have been committed and vehicles can be immobilised where necessary.
