We’re Celebrating World EV Day Today!
World EV Day™️ is a worldwide celebration of sustainable e-mobility and the decarbonisation of transport. It is held on 9th September every year, with 2024 signifying the fifth year of the celebration.
What is an EV?
For those of you who don’t already know what an EV is, it is the abbreviation commonly used for an electric vehicle. An electric vehicle is one that is powered by an electric motor rather than an internal combustion engine (which powers petrol and diesel vehicles).
This rechargeable electric battery can be charged via an electric charging point and gives the vehicle the energy it needs for the motor to power it, as opposed to requiring fuel from a fuel pump. Some vehicles are fully electric, while others are hybrids, combining an electric motor with a combustion engine. Hybrids have advantages, but far fewer than fully electric vehicles.
What is World EV Day?
World EV Day is a day when people, groups and even countries discuss and action ways to drive change together, raising awareness of the benefits of electric vehicles.
Why Are EVs So Important?
The Government has announced a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035 (which may be moved back to its original deadline of 2030), due to the high emissions of these vehicles being incompatible with achieving Net Zero decarbonisation targets. Electric cars on the other hand, have zero tailpipe emissions. This means there is no exhaust emitting CO2, NOx or particulates.
Those wanting to buy or lease new cars won’t have any choice but to go electric following the ban.Transport accounts for 27% of our country’s total emissions and nearly all of that comes from road vehicles, therefore electric cars are a key component in helping the UK limit the global temperature rise to under 2 degrees as part of the Paris Agreement.
Using an electric car is fast becoming easier than ever, through an extensive public charging infrastructure, ever increasing its thousands of powerful EV chargers across the UK , with more installed every month.
How is Wessex Fleet Involved in World EV Day?
Here at Wessex Fleet, we are seeing more and more businesses turn to electric vehicles to meet their business needs and emission compliancy. Almost every day, we’re involved in bringing EVs and drivers together, assisting the move towards a decarbonised world.
The ban on sales of new petrol, diesel and hybrid models in 2035, proliferation of public chargers, and government grants to install chargers for your business, all mean there really is no time like the present to make the change to a fully electric fleet.
What are the Benefits of an Electric Vehicle Fleet?
- No road tax for vehicles under £40,000.
- Lower running costs, including charging costs.
- Less noise pollution.
- Less wear and tear due to fewer moving parts.
- Zero congestion and Clean Air Zone charges.
- Lower rates of company tax and employee Benefit In Kind (BIK) rates.
